But he has directed Secretary McMahon to take all legal steps to trim the agency.
Media outlets had reported that President Donald Trump was going to sign an executive order directing Education Secretary Linda McMahon to begin dismantling the Department of Education this week.
The president’s administration acknowledged that only Congress has the authority to officially abolish the Education Department, which is unlikely due to the need for 60 votes in favor of the move in the Senate.
President Trump has directed Secretary McMahon to reduce the workforce and take steps to “facilitate the closure of the Education Department” as “appropriate and permitted by law.”
The president stated, “The experiment of controlling American education through Federal programs and dollars—and the unaccountable bureaucrats those programs and dollars support — has failed our children, our teachers, and our families.”
President Trump would like to return the management of education to the states.
